Toenail Changes Can Reflect Health Problems:
• Lines in your nails. Horizontal lines across the nails are sometimes referred to as Beau’s lines, and these usually indicate areas where the nail growth has been interrupted. This is often due to injury, or to illness, malnutrition or chemotherapy, but it can also result from conditions such as diabetes, fever and peripheral vascular disease.
• Yellow nails. A fungal infection in the toenails is usually noticed when the toenails become thicker or look yellowy. As these infections progress, nails may become thick and brittle, causing pain as they put pressure on the skin. There are many home remedies for infection but it is important to visit your doctor if you do not notice any improvement, as yellow nails can also be associated with thyroid problems, psoriasis, lung problems or diabetes.
• Streaks in the nails. Dark streaks in the nails are a warning sign that should not be taken lightly, since these can be an indicator of melanoma. You should be aware that any areas of dark pigment that streak the nails or appear close to cuticles can reveal the presence of skin cancer, and it is vital to check any concerns with your doctor as soon as possible.
• Spooning nails. Nails that develop raised ridges and scoop outwards appear depressed in the middle, which is known as spoon nails. This can occur as a result of anaemia, heart disease or hypothyroidism, and should always be checked with a medical professional.
